The Mall Adventure

When I visited the Woodland Mall, I was shocked to pick up on little nuances that I’ve never noticed before. For instance, the way they design the mall so it is no longer one-stop shopping. The halls are wide and spacious; there is comforting foliage all around, and kid friendly areas in the heart of the common area. I was particularly stricken by the play area, where children can play on giant, blown up varieties of breakfast foods. There are benches for the parents, and it is located conveniently next to Starbucks; when I observed the parents, more than half were sipping there lattes. When I went to purchase my own coffee, I couldn’t help but focus on their Christmas cup. On it, it wishes of its consumers to have happiness, and gave you a sense of warmth and family. It seems to be saying to me, “Buy this product, and feel safe, and all your wishes will come true! You have a family with Starbucks.” I have definitely bought into this, I cannot walk past a Starbucks without going in and grabbing my white mocha. By watching “The Pretenders”, I was able to look at the advertisements in the mall and realize the amount of effort that is put in to them in order to capture the heart of the consumer. All around the mall, stores are strategically placed in order to get the consumer to walk around and visit as many as possible. The signs are mostly for ongoing sales, which tend to draw the consumer in. In conclusion, it was definitely a new experience walking through the mall with a more aware sense of the advertisements all around me, and understanding of the thought that was put into every detail of the mall to make it a shopping, money spending, haven.

  1. A white chocolate mocha is Rob's beverage-of-choice, too! :) Good observations (and photo!), Cory.
